Intro to Saturday Group Rides |
Attending an Intro is a requirement for all riders new to Chasers wishing to cycle with us, independent of level, to ensure everyone has an awareness of how to ride safely in a group.
It is mandatory if you want to join Saturday Group Rides.
The Intro facilitates getting familiar with and practicing group riding techniques in a safe environment. It’s also a perfect opportunity to get to know other members and to ask more experienced riders any questions you may have.
|
We recommend that you check the Group Riding and Getting Started sections before attending your Intro to Saturday Group Ride. There will be a briefing to explain the principles of group riding and how to ride in a group safely. The ride will then provide the opportunity to put those principles into practice. There will always be an experienced rider leading each group. |
What is the standard? This is a social ride first and foremost - so don’t expect to be setting any PBs. It’s a great opportunity for you to meet other Chasers and to get some experience of riding in a group. However, it’s important you have a good level of fitness and are able to cycle over 50km with a fair level of elevation so you are ready to join our Saturday Group Rides straight away. Depending on numbers, it’s likely we run more than one group. On the Intro, the groups will always ride at the pace of the slowest rider in the group and we won't leave you behind. If you feel that you’re not quite at the level to join our Intro ride yet, don’t fret! Our Summer Tuesday evening and Thursday morning sessions are a great opportunity to build up your fitness levels. We also run a “Build up to Brighton” programme from Feb - April so keep an eye out for that if we’re out of summer. Just come to one of these sessions and introduce yourself to the session leader! What kit do I need? Please see the Getting Started section for detailed information of the kit you will need. All riders must wear a cycle helmet for all our club rides. Any riders attending without a helmet will not be allowed to join the ride, and we do not allow flat handlebars or TT bikes in our intro rides. Routes We normally run our intro rides in a loop around Richmond Park and then out to Esher. Check our routes here. The Saturday Group Ride provides three routes - one long, one medium, and one short - that will allow you to test your fitness and make better choices as to what route and group to ride with. Most of our club members ride the long or medium route. We usually run an intro to SGR ride on the third Sunday of each month, with some exceptions depending on racing schedule, holidays, etc. If you’re feeling ready to join one of our Saturday Group Rides, sign up by registering on the appropriate event on the calendar. Coffee & Cake? An integral part of the Intro is to stop for a coffee/cake/pint at the end and a chat with the other Chasers on the ride. Use this opportunity to question more experienced members on which rides are appropriate for you, what pace group you should ride in, etc. Any Other Questions? If there is anything we have missed, please do get in touch by emailing us at cycling.chasers@gmail.com or posting on the FB page. |
